‘The Voice’ recap: the final four compete to win it all

Maelyn Jarmon performs; Trae Patton/NBCPart one of The Voice season 16 finale began Monday night, with the four finalists singing for America’s vote.

Coaches Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine have no artists left in competition, so the finals came down to Team Blake Shelton’s three country artists — Dexter Roberts, Gyth Rigdon and Andrew Sevener — and Team John Legend’s Texas songbird, Maelyn Jarmon. Each artist performed a cover song, a duet with their coach, and an original song.

The show began with Maelyn performing the original song, “Wait for You.” She said her song choice was inspired by her boyfriend, with whom she’s been out of touch because of the competition. Her live performance had Adam repeating his Maelyn-specific mantra afterward that she should win the competition, and that it has nothing to do with his love of hating on Blake.

The first coach and artist duet was between Blake and Andrew Sevener, who performed “All Right Now,” by Free.

Alabama country artist Dexter Roberts performed a cover of Randy Houser’s “Anything Goes,” a song that allowed Dexter to pour his emotion into his powerhouse vocals. Kelly was won over, saying that the song put Dexter in the vain of soulful country.

The next duet, between Blake and Gyth Rigdon, was a cover of the Travis Tritt version of “Take It Easy,” by The Eagles.

Andrew Sevener’s original song was “Rural Route Raising,” a choice Kelly liked because it skirts the line between old and new country. John joked that despite being a city slicker he could appreciate country music, saying Andrew had been “in a zone” his last few performances.

Next, John and Maelyn performed a sublime duet of the Nat King Cole classic, “Unforgettable.” Maelyn talked about the similarities between Cole and her coach, and John shared that, growing up, he won a local Star Search competition covering the song.

Gyth Rigdon’s cover performance was of the late Earl Thomas Conley’s “Once in a Blue Moon.” During rehearsal, Blake said he wasn’t afraid of Gyth covering any song, so long as he felt connected to it. Conley passed away in April of this year and following Gyth’s performance, Blake said Earl’s family would be so proud of the moment. “Way to honor a country music hero,” declared Blake.

Dexter Roberts chose his original song, “Looking Back,” because it put him at home vocally. But Kelly didn’t focus on his voice, saying she loved Dexter as a person just as much. Adam said Dexter’s performance was his “strongest look,” and Blake called him the most ready of all the finalists to go make an album.

Andrew Sevener had prior success covering a rock song in the competition, which is why he performed Hinder’s “Lips of an Angel.” John said that while he’s obviously partial to Maelyn, he’d pick Andrew from the remaining Team Blake artists. Blake said that the night belonged to Andrew.

The last duet, between Blake and Dexter Roberts, was Brooks & Dunn’s “Hard Working Man.”

Gyth Rigdon’s original song, “Proof I’ve Always Loved You,” was unique because he actually wrote it. He said he penned it a number of years ago after meeting his eventual wife, and the performance proved to be a stirring tribute to their love. Blake said that Gyth performing his own song raised him to another level.

Maelyn closed out the show with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, her elegiac voice soaring over the audience. Maelyn had a connection to the song, having sang it at a karaoke bar with her father when she was a struggling waitress in New York. She recognized that despite the song’s title, the lyrics are about longing and regret. Afterward, Adam described Maelyn as an “angel from heaven.” John said he felt transported and that it was all the things we want music to be, imploring America to vote for Maelyn.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday night’s The Voice season finale. which begins at 9 p.m. ET on NBC. Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, Brandon Urie from Panic! at the Disco, Halsey, BTS, Khalid, Travis Tritt, OneRepublic and Hootie & the Blowfish are scheduled to perform.

Party with Hardy! Laine beats Alejandro Aranda to win ‘American Idol’

ABC/Eric McCandlessThe votes are in, and our new American Idol is — Laine Hardy.

This season came to a close with an epic three-hour finale Sunday night, complete with a real-time vote that whittled the finalists from three down to two, until finally the winner was crowned.

After the first round of solo performances, Madison VanDenberg was the first to go, leaving Laine and Alejandro Aranda facing off for the title. Despite Alejandro impressively performing all-original music the entire night — and the judges hinting that he was their favorite — America clearly wanted to party with Hardy, voting Laine as their American Idol. It was a second chance for the 18-year-old Louisiana native, after first having appeared on the show last season.

Laine delivered flawless and confident performances throughout the night, including songs that reflected his roots, like “Home” by Marc Broussard and “Jambalaya (on the Bayou)” by Hank Williams. Alejandro’s original tunes included tunes titled “Millennial Love,” “Tonight,” and his heartfelt audition song, “Out Loud.”

While Laine duetted with country singer Jon Pardi on two songs, Alejandro opted to perform an original composition called “10 Years,” backed by an orchestra wearing signature Alejandro beanies.

After Laine was announced the winner, he performed the winner’s song, “Flame,” to close the show.

The finalists weren’t the only ones who got stage time last night. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan also performed, along with a couple of American Idol alumni and various country, rock and pop acts.

Here are some of the highlights:

Lionel opened the show with his classic song “Dancing on the Ceiling” with the top 10. Katy performed her latest single, “Con Calma,” with Latin star Daddy Yankee, and sang her hit “Unconditionally” with top-10 finalist Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon. Luke sang “Every Breath You Take” with Laci Kaye Booth, as well as his current single, “Knockin’ Boots.”

Madison returned to the stage after her elimination to sing “Speechless” with country duo Dan + Shay.

American Idol season eight runner-up Adam Lambert, one of this season’s mentors, sang his new single, “New Eyes,” and also rocked out to Queen‘s “Bohemian Rhapsody” with top-10 finalist Dimitrius GrahamAmerican Idol season four winner Carrie Underwood performed her latest hit, “Southbound.”

In an unexpected emotional moment, this season’s blind contestant, Shayy, returned to sing a powerful rendition of “Rise Up” with Andra Day.

Other performances included a Kool & the Gang medley with the band and the top eight finalists, rock band Weezer and, in the most bizarre performance of the night, Montell Jordan performed “This Is How We Do It” backed by Katy Perry lookalikes doing the worm. During audition rounds, Katy infamously did the worm to that song.

‘The Voice’ recap: three artists advance, and three more sing for the last spot in the finale

L-R: “The Voice” finalists Andrew Sevener, Gyth Rigdon, Maelyn Jarmon and Dexter Roberts; Trae Patton/NBCOn Tuesday night’s The Voice, host Carson Daly revealed who among the eight semifinalists will be advancing to next week’s finale, based on America’s vote.

Three of the top eight artists were voted through by viewers, the two bottom vote-getters were eliminated, and the remaining three sang for an “Instant Save.”

Heading into Tuesday night, coach Blake Shelton still had five artists in competition, John Legend had two artists, Kelly Clarkson had one, and Adam Levine had none.

At the top of the show, Blake Shelton performed his latest single, “God’s Country.”

The top eight then joined Carson onstage to announce, in no particular order, the first artist to advance to the finale. It was Team Legend’s Maelyn Jarmon, who shared a hug with her coach.

The next artist saved was Team Blake’s Dexter Roberts, who looked genuinely surprised, despite his string of powerhouse performances.

Next, Kelly Clarkson performed a duet of Bob Seger and Martina McBride‘s “Chances Are” with her team member, Rod Stokes.

The last artist saved by America’s vote was Gyth Rigdon, also from Team Blake.

Former Team Blake member, and The Voice season-nine runner-up, Emily Ann Roberts performed her new song, “Someday Dream.”

Then came the battle for the Instant Save. Carson announced the three artists who would perform for the right to advance to the finale, voted on by fans on Twitter. Those artists were Andrew Sevener, Rod Stokes and Shawn Sounds, meaning team Blake members Kim Cherry and Carter Lloyd Horne were eliminated.

Each of the remaining artists chose their song to perform.

Andrew chose “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, a song Blake said afterward he wished Andrew would have saved for the finale. While Blake was confident that Andrew would advance, he promised Andrew it wouldn’t be the end of the road. “If you go home tonight, I want you to go ahead and start packing your bags to come play my venues” said Blake, gladly offering to book Andrew at any of Blake’s Ole Red bars.

Rod sang NEEDTOBREATHE‘s “Brother.”  After his performance Kelly was wrapped in emotion, saying Rod had the kind of voice she had been dying to sing with her whole life. She joked that before the show Blake jinxed her, predicting she was going to cry, and the jinx worked. Halting her tears, Kelly told Rod that he and his fiancé were terrific people and that Rod had a classic voice that could sing anything from Chris Stapleton to Michael McDonald to Ray Charles.

Rod was moved by the praise from his coach, saying that singing with Kelly was a goal accomplished.

Shawn Sounds was last, choosing a more upbeat number: “That’s What I Like,” by Bruno Mars. Afterward, John said he felt fortunate to work with someone as musically gifted as Shawn, praising his confidence and hard work during their rehearsals.

But when the results were in, it was Andrew Sevener who won the Instant Save, meaning Shawn and Rod were heading home.

Next week, The Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift with Brandon Urie are scheduled to perform for the two night, live Voice finale.

Part one of The Voice finale begins Monday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

‘American Idol’ picks its top three finalists

L-R: Finalists Alejandro Aranda, Madison VanDenburg and Laine Hardy; ABC/Eric McCandlessWe’re one step closer to crowning this season’s American Idol.

On Sunday night’s penultimate episode, the remaining five contestants performed three songs each. The first was a song chosen by season-long mentor Bobby Bones; the second was an Elton John song in honor of the upcoming Rocketman movie; and the third was a song dedicated to the contestants’ personal heroes.

At the end of the night, America picked its top three: Laine Hardy, Madison VanDenburg and Alejandro Aranda are going to next week’s finale. That means that we had to say goodbye to Wade Cota and Laci Kaye Booth, the latter of whom the judges saved from elimination last week.

In a nail-biting moment, Alejandro was the last person announced for the top three — and it would have been criminal had he not made it. All three of his performances Sunday night were standouts, as he transitioned seamlessly from guitar to piano, and from classic hit to original song. Lionel Richie called Alejandro a “diamond” and a “phenomenon,” and Luke Bryan predicted he would “change music.”

Laine also delivered some his best vocals of the competition, while Madison hit notes the judges had never heard from her before.

Tune in next week for the American Idol season finale at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, to see which of the top three will take the title.
