Ever since Justin Moore scored a platinum-selling number-one hit in 2011 with “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,” he’s avoided the temptation to try to create a similar song — until now, that is.
“We really haven’t done that since that song,” the Arkansas native explains. “You know, I feel like at times us as artists, we’ll have a big hit on something and we’ll go, ‘All right, we need this type of song. We need a ‘Heaven’ song for this album, we need a ‘Point at You’ song for this album.'”
“And so that’s something that I’ve been really cognizant about not forcing that over the years,” Justin continues, “and just kind of letting it happen if it did.”
And happen it did, with “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home.” Justin’s current top-ten hit not only shares the poignant sentiment of his previous smash, it was inspired by how he typically introduces “Heaven” in concert, mentioning America’s fallen servicemen and women.
“This idea kind of fell out of the sky for me,” Justin tells ABC Radio. “And I don’t know why they do that sometimes, but I’m thankful when they do.”
“And so I’m proud of the song” he adds. “I think it’s got a chance to maybe help some people through a difficult time, kind of like ‘Heaven’ did. And if that’s the case, then wherever it goes on the chart will be great, as long as it helps one person get through a tough time.”
“The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home” is the lead single from Justin’s fifth album, Late Nights and Longnecks, which is new today.
